Aquamation
Aquamation (also known as alkaline hydrolysis) is a water based, gentle and environmentally method of final disposition. The aquamation process results in fine white ashes similar to those produced from traditional flame based cremation and can be spread in exactly the same way by your loved ones.
The process was originally developed in 1888, but more recently in 2005 started to become popular and accepted as an alternate method of disposition that does not require fossil fuels or other inorganic chemicals to aid in the decomposition of the remains.
Bass Coast Funeral Services will make all the necessary arrangements with the Aquamation provider including transport and return of the ‘ashes’ for scattering, turned into jewellery or to be kept by the family.

Aquamation Process
During aquamation, the body is placed in a chamber which is filled with a mixture of water and potassium hydroxide, the water is heated to approximately 160ºc – due to elevated pressure in the chamber the water does not boil. Instead, the body is effectively broken down into its natural organic components. The entire process takes between 4-6 hours depending on body size.
At the conclusion of the process, a liquid containing acids, sugars and organic compounds remains with soft, porous bones. The bones can easily be crushed in your hand, producing the traditional ashes. The liquid is safe to dispose in regular sewer systems.
